Details about this class
This course is designed to explore historical and systemic inequities in US society and how our own identities are socially constructed. We will consider our own role and responsibility in creating socially just and equitable schools where all students, families and communities are valued. In this course, we will reflect and analyze our own cultures, communities and place in a racialized world and how that will impact our work in classrooms.
We will meet via zoom each Tuesday from 5 - 6:30 pm, starting January 6th. Attendance each week in addition to active participation in course discussions, assignments and projects is mandatory. Our text for this class is So You Want to Talk about Race by Ijeoma Oluo. You can find this at the PCC bookstore or support a local bookstore to purchase this text.
In this course, knowledge is a shared resource that is constructed by co-creation, collaboration and inclusion (in this case welcoming all lived and learned experiences). By decolonizing our thinking we can reframe, rethink, and reconstruct our systems of education and not only make it more representative, but uplift currently marginalized voices. In this course you will be asked to reflect introspectively on your own experiences, share with your peers and offer critical thinking analysis. This course is heavily discussion based and we will spend plenty of time creating an inclusive and thoughtful community to have discussions. There is limited lecture in this course and we will embrace co-teaching, multimodal methods of learning, and projects.
Please know that my first priority is your well being so that you can be ready to learn. Therefore, if there is anything that is affecting your ability to participate in the class, please do not hesitate to reach out. I am here to support you and I will do my best to connect you to resources.
