Botanical Art: History and How-to
Uplevel your botanical sketches by using history as inspiration. Part discussion, part hands-on, explore how the botanical world has been depicted throughout time and learn to create quick watercolor botanicals of your own.
Each class session is divided into three parts: discussion, demonstration and activity. We examine the history of botanical art and illustration through slides, discussing the historical, scientific or artistic roles/functions of these images. Next, we discuss materials such as paper, paint and other supplies needed for in-studio or on-the-go painting. Then we do a variety of hands-on exploration exercises using different materials and techniques of ink and watercolor application. Gentle guidance and encouragement will be provided as you develop a botanical project: either one finished 8"x10"
rendering or multiple smaller watercolor/ink studies.
