Details about this class
This is an in-person class, meeting Wednesdays from 1:30 - 3:20 PM at the Willow Creek Opportunity Center. Scheduled class time will be used for instructor presentation and student activities.
This course will give you foundational knowledge and practical skills for participating in our digital world. Topics covered include:
- Microsoft Office 365: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access
- Google Drive and Google Docs
- The Internet, the Web, and strategies for searching
- Digital Citizenship and Social Media
- Major figures in the history of computers
- Emerging technology
- Basics of computer hardware, software, and operating systems
- Strategies for purchasing new devices
- Security and the ubiquity of databases
- Strategies for online collaboration
The course activities include:
- Assignments - opportunities to practice using Microsoft Office 365 and Google Docs.
- Online discussions - Opportunities to share your ideas about various course topics
- Final project - Use two or more of the tools you’ve learned to complete a project
There is no textbook for this class.
This class is best suited to Windows-based computers.
If a student has a non-Windows computer (e.g., MacOS, Linux), then PCC will provide them access to a "virtual" Windows computer (at no cost) using an application called Propeller.
Note: Google Chromebook is not recommended for use in this class.
Technology
- Meets the technology Requirements for taking an online course at PCC
- A recommended Internet Browser installed
- Ability to use Google Drive and Google Docs
- Ability to install or access Microsoft Office programs which can be obtained for free through PCC’s Microsoft Office 365 for Education licensing
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
