Technology
This course is a hybrid (online asynchronous lecture + in person lab & recitation).
The class also follows a “flipped classroom” model. Students are responsible for reviewing the course materials ahead of our lab and recitation time and come prepared to class.
You can expect to need 15 hours each week to complete assigned work for the class (readings, videos, assignments) outside our in person time.
LECTURE TEXTBOOK
We will use the Campbell Biology in Focus textbook available through the bookstore. An access code to Mastering Biology is NOT required. You may buy an older edition or a used textbook if you prefer.
Alternatively, you may use this Open Educational Resource biology textbook. https://openstax.org/details/books/concepts-biology
Please note: The Campbell Biology textbook is preferred as this is the material my lectures are based on and where the learning objectives and study materials come from. You can expect the Openstax text will have different images, diagrams, and wording (while it is still an accurate and reliable text if you choose to go that route).
LAB MANUAL
The OER lab manual is available digitally inside our D2L shell as part of the course materials. A printed copy can be purchased through the bookstore.
WORKLOAD
Workload for this class includes:
- Practice Lecture quizzes (weekly, in D2L)
- Lecture exams (2 midterm exams + final exam, in person)
-Recitation practice work (in person)
- Lab homework (weekly, in D2L)
- Lab quizzes (weekly, in person)
- Lab graphing & scientific method assignment (in D2L)

ATTENDANCE
Both lab and recitation for this section take place on campus at Rock Creek.
-Recitation: attendance is required. We will complete practice work and answer your questions during this time. We will also take our midterm exams during recitation.
-Lab: attendance is required. Missing 2 or more labs results in automatically getting an F. Make up labs at Rock Creek can be arranged a maximum of two times throughout the term.
