Details about this class

BA 205 Business Communication with Dr. Michael Hohn

In BA 205, we focus on why communication is one of the most important skills you can bring into any job, internship, or business. You’ll practice writing, speaking, and presenting in ways that fit professional settings, and you’ll learn how to handle real workplace situations such as difficult emails, unclear expectations, and mixed messages.

Hybrid format (how the class works)
This is a hybrid class. We meet once a week on campus for live discussions, activities, and presentation practice. The rest of the work happens online in D2L, where you’ll find weekly modules, assignments, and announcements. Plan to check D2L at least twice a week so you stay on track.

Communication + Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
Alongside business writing and presentations, we’ll work with Emotional Intelligence (EQ): things like self-awareness, empathy, and relationship management. You’ll see how EQ skills show up in everyday communication and why they matter even more in an AI-heavy world where human skills are what set you apart.

Strengths-based approach
You’ll also complete the CliftonStrengths assessment and use your results throughout the term. We’ll connect your natural talents to how you write, present, and interact with others so you can lean into what you already do well while building new skills.

What to expect with me as your instructor
I teach from a strengths-based perspective. I focus on recognizing and developing what you do best, not just pointing out what’s “wrong.” You can expect a positive, supportive environment where questions are welcome, your experiences matter, and everyone’s contribution is respected.

I’m looking forward to working with you and helping you build communication skills you can actually use in school, work, and life.
