Details about this class

What do people in business do? In this class we talk “live” about how for profit and non-profit organizations work, including how to start a business. Welcome to “Introduction to Business”!

This is a “Remote+Online” class. It will be held on Zoom, in D2L each Monday during the Winter Term from 1:00 pm to 2:50 pm. You will be expected to attend each class, and attendance will be taken. Winter Term, 2026 starts Monday, January 5 and ends on Sunday, March 22.

The course textbook is “Exploring Business V5.0”, E-Book or printed book. By Karen Collins, published by FlatWorld, 2024. The last time I checked, the PCC bookstore cost of the e-book was $46.20. The PCC bookstore should also have a printed version available. You also can purchase the e-book directly from the publisher (FlatWorld) for $36.95 or printed with online access for $63.95.

When class opens in D2L, I suggest you do the following in D2L. In “Content”, read all of the four parts of “Getting Started”. During the Term, I will do a “live” discussion of each chapter which will be saved in D2L. You can review the recorded class in “Zoom”, under “Cloud Recordings”. (Viewing recorded classes will not count for attendance.) Help for you to listen and view information is in “Getting Started”, “What Apps can PCC Students Use”, in the “Zoom” section.

Also, before class starts, under “Content”, open and read the information in “Course Syllabus” and “Course Introductions”. The rest of the course is set up by week. You can open the “Week of January 5” and review the section. All chapter PowerPoint slides are posted in the week they will be covered in class. Classes will be conducted using “Zoom” with “live” discussion of how business works.

For the week of January 5 read Chapter One, “The Foundations of Business”. On the first day of class, Monday, January 5, I will cover the course introduction slides, the Syllabus, briefly cover Chapter One, and discuss the Student Introduction that you will complete and post on D2L for my viewing only. In D2L, go to “Zoom” to enter the class.

On Monday, January 12, there will be a short, multiple-choice quiz from Chapter Two at the start of class. You need to be online at 1:00 pm on class days. Go to “Coursework”, “Quizzes” in D2L.The quiz will only be open for five minutes. You will have two attempts for each quiz. The quiz will be graded and count toward attendance. After the quiz I will review Chapter Two and “How to Write Your Business Plan”. All Examinations and Quizzes are posted in Quizzes, in Coursework. All Assignments are in Coursework.

Grading is based on the following criteria: Homework Assignments, Business Plan Project, Attendance (based on Quizzes and Poll participation), Mid-Term and Final Examination (posted in Quizzes). All Homework assignments are posted in Assignments at the start of the Winter Term.

For your maximum benefit of the course, you need to attend online as you would attend in a classroom on campus. For BA-101Z (10208) this Term, this means attending from 1:00 pm to 2:50 pm on Mondays. Attendance is discussed in the Syllabus (which you can request before the start of class). I look forward to you joining my class. You can contact me at john.eichenberger@pcc.edu. During the Winter Term you can meet with me in private Zoom sessions, or we can talk by phone. Just email me to request a meeting. Welcome to “Introduction to Business”!
