Details about this class

Thank you for your interest in this course!

This section of CH151 is hybrid and "flipped." There is an on-line component and an in-person component. Course content will be presented through interactive videos that you need to watch and interact with on your own time before attending on-campus meetings and labs. Please expect to spend about two hours a week (some weeks may take a little less time and others may take a little more time) watching and interacting with these videos as you work through some practice problems. In addition to watching and interacting with these videos, you will also have online homework, and you will complete several other assignments to help you prepare for some on-campus exams. The online homework and these other assignments will need to be completed outside of class time, so please plan accordingly.

In-person lectures at the Southeast Campus:

Two hours per week are scheduled on campus for practicing course material and working in small groups. (Wednesdays 10:00 to 11:50 am). You must prepare for and attend these meetings. You must be able to attend BOTH the lecture and laboratory in-person components in order to register for the course. Students who do not attend the first lecture meeting during week 1 will be dropped from the course as a no show.

In-person labs at the Southeast Campus:

Students will need to attend the lab sessions in person (Wednesdays 12:30 pm – 3:20pm). Labs will reenforce the materials covered in the online lectures through hands on learning and experimentation. There are no remote labs for this course. There are no make up labs for this course. One lab score will be dropped (not including the first lab) to account for illness, emergencies, etc.)   You must be able to attend BOTH the lecture and laboratory in-person components in order to register for the course. Students who do not attend the first lab during week 1 will be dropped from the course as a no show.

You can preview our chemistry lab space using this immersive, virtual model: SCOM 306 Virtual Twin

In-person exams at the Southeast Campus:

Midterm Tests and a Final Exam during finals week) will be given in-person on campus during our regularly scheduled class or lab sessions and during the regularly scheduled Final Exam time for this course. Chemistry is inherently cumulative because many topics build on previous topics. Therefore, all exams are cumulative.  Each subsequent exam will add new material not covered on the previous exam while also including some review questions covering material from earlier in the term. There are no make up Tests for this course. One Test score will be dropped (not including the Final Exam) to account for illness, emergencies, etc.). Plan to to take the Final Exam during scheduled time according to the College's Final Exam Schedule. The Final Exam cannot be dropped to account for illness or emergency.

Required materials:

Your textbook and online homework system are both free and open source. You will not need to purchase a textbook or access to an online homework system! However, you will need to purchase an inexpensive lab manual at the Southeast campus bookstore. There is no need to purchase the lab manual before the term starts. We will further discuss the required materials during our first meeting, and you will have time to purchase the lab manual on the day you come to campus for the first time. Our lecture room, the lab, and the bookstore are all in the same building. Thus, you will have time to visit the bookstore when you get to campus on the first day. You will also need a scientific calculator. You may use a scientific calculator that you have already purchased for another course, but it must be capable of scientific notation, logs, exponents, etc.  Please do not rush to purchase a fancy graphing calculator or the inexpensive scientific calculator sold in PCC Bookstores until after our first meeting. I do not recommend the inexpensive scientific calculator sold in PCC Bookstores (Texas Instruments 30XS Scientific Calculator). Instead, I recommend a cheaper and easier to use alternative (Texas Instruments 30XIIS Scientific Calculator). I will discuss further during our first meeting.

Please reach out to the instructor if you have any questions. Registered students will receive a welcome email with more details and a syllabus when the term starts.

Registered students who do not attend BOTH the first lecture meeting AND the first lab during week 1 will be dropped from the course as a no show. Students cannot add this course after the first lecture meeting and/or the first lab have met during week 1. Students must attend BOTH the first lecture meeting AND the first lab meeting during week1 to remain enrolled in or add this course.
