First Poems: Finding Your Voice

Campus contacts

Discover the vitality of poetry and study its formal structures, while learning to find and strengthen your innate poetic voice. Practice approaches and study contemporary poets. Discuss editing and self-publishing. Beginners welcome.

What is poetry and how do we go about writing it? Where do we find subject matter? How do we manage rhythm and melody while making it sparkle? We look at a variety of poetic approaches, and read a range of modern and contemporary poets whose voices might inspire our own. We write a handful of poems, discuss editing, and self-publishing. Whether you're penning your first pieces, or delving deeper into an ongoing practice, this class will help you make your poetry your own.
