What is a monument? Learn about the symbolism of monuments and consider the controversies that surround their creation and continued existence. Finally, come explore the monument landscape of Portland through an on-site tour and discussion.

Is a monument a sculpture, a place that marks an exceptional event, or a representation of a shared history? While exploring the different types of monuments and their symbolism, we will consider the long-standing controversy that surrounds the creation, placement and continued existence of monuments. The final class will include a guided tour and discussion of local monuments here in Portland.
