Details about this class
Hello! Thank you for your interest in SOC 223 Sociology of the Life Course.
This course is required for the AAS Degree in Gerontology and all Gerontology Certificates. It also fulfills the Social Science General Education and Cultural Literacy requirements.
In this online course, our exploration of aging will be through a sociological lens -- we will look closely at how social structures, contexts, and systems shape individual experiences -- others' experiences as well as our own experiences -- throughout the life course.
This course is designed to be a collaborative learning community, with a high level of student and instructor participation. Learning activities include weekly required reading and discussion assignments, and a multi-part capstone Life Stories Project, which we will work on throughout the term.
There is one required text, available from the PCC Bookstore in both digital and printed formats -- Aging: Concepts and Controversies, 10th edition, by Moody & Sasser. Note that this text is also used in the companion course SOC 230 Introduction to Gerontology, offered Winter and Summer terms.
