Details about this class

Hi, I'm glad you are checking out this class. If you'd like to learn more about me, check here.

In this class we explore many of the most important expressions of religion impacting Asia. We will also note the conflicts in Asia that invoke religion as a contributing factor. There is no presumption of any background in the topic. Whether your interest is personal; for travel; for career purposes, such as working in politics, international business, or travel; or you plan to work in health care or social services with people who practice Asian Religions, this class provides you a guided exploration towards building your understanding.

If you have experience with Asia and Asian Religions, you are invited to bring your knowledge to share, as we explore this vast topic together. You have the opportunity to explore beyond the material presented in class, through a variety of optional assignments. At the end of each one- or two-week module, you have the chance to reflect on what you are learning.

This is a fully online course, designed to be accessible to everyone. The learning materials include embedded reading, and videos. You will also have the opportunity to find resources to share with the class. Beyond the weekly online class discussions, I am happy to meet with you individually or in groups, in real time, to discuss class material, answer questions, or just chat.

I use labor-based grading. You decide the amount of work you want to do, and earn the associated grade if the work meets expectations. Everyone is asked to complete five very short quizzes in class, which are repeated to check your basic knowledge at the beginning and end of modules. The final exam is a combination of reflection on content, and a more general reflection on learning.

Here is the syllabus from Winter 2024. The Spring 2024 Syllabus will be similar.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
