Details about this class

Hi and thanks for checking this page! This is an in-person class that meets once a week on the SE campus. It's a "hybrid" format where it's part online and part in-person. The amount of work is the same as a class that meets twice a week. This class offers more flexibility but requires more responsibility to do the asynchronous work. Make sure this will work well with your learning style.

Please look for the course notes packet at the bookstore. I will also send you the PDF if you prefer to print it yourself or through the Multnomah County Library for free.

Note: All math classes have returned to proctored testing. This class will have a midterm and a final during our scheduled class time on campus.

You'll be watching videos with fill-in notes before class each week and then practicing with data and activities in class so your classmates and I can help. We will meet in a computer lab so we can help everyone with the free online stats calculators.

My goal is to make statistics fun, relevant and interesting with a social justice focus. There are lecture videos with fill-in notes, labs with real data, online homework and a take-home quiz each week, a midterm and a final.

The book is free online and all the apps we use are free. We will look at aspects of social justice through the data sets in the course. You can get a feel for my style of teaching through videos, old syllabi and previous course materials at https://www.caraleemath.com/. Feel free to email me with any questions at tristan.holmes@pcc.edu.

Technology

Our class will be held in a computer lab on campus. I will show you how to use free online stats calculators.

Access to a printer is helpful but not required. You can buy all the notes pages needed from the bookstore, print them yourself, or use a tablet to save electronic copies. There will be video lectures with fill-in notes. We will use many free online stats simulators and calculators that are required. I will show you how to use all of these in the class videos and we will practice during class.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
