Details about this class

This class is entirely online, with a supportive Zoom meeting on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 8:50 pm. The  Zoom meetings are not required but encouraged. Students have the option to review previous class recordings or watch recordings of the supportive meetings this term. My plan is to spend the first hour of the meeting going over the material of each module unit of the course ( A module per week) and then dedicate the rest of the time to homework assignments. Only the first hour of the meeting is recorded. Students can choose how long they stay on the Zoom call, maybe just for the first hour, and then attempt some homework questions with your instructor's support, or students can watch the recorded videos at their convenience.

My goal is to support you as you develop your statistical literacy. My syllabus for this term isn't ready yet, though here's a link to my last class:  Link to Syllabus.

Videos and Recordings explaining each class topic are available on our course page. I will also be available to support your learning. The course is set up to engage everyone in active participation and learning, acknowledging active lives and/or complicated schedules.

For this term, the Mathematics department at PCC has determined to do at least two virtual proctored exams. The midterm exam is scheduled (to be determined) in the afternoon of Wednesday of the fifth week of classes, and the final exam is scheduled during finals week. There are other proctoring options available. Please get in touch with me for more information.

Proctored Exams: Proctored exams are one of the many assessment tools used in MTH/STAT courses to assess student learning. For in-person sections, exams are proctored in person on campus during class time. For remote sections, exams are primarily proctored virtually by the instructor in Zoom during remote class time. For online sections, exams are primarily proctored virtually by the instructor in Zoom on dates/times scheduled by the instructor.

I (your instructor) will proctor the exams for this class virtually on (TBD); please make every concerted effort to attend my virtual proctored exams listed below.

To have your exam proctored virtually, you must fully read and understand the Student Guide to Virtually Proctored Exams in Zoom and meet the technology/environment requirements; technology support will not be provided on exam day. Virtual proctoring was designed and piloted in collaboration between Math, Online Learning, and the Testing Center.

If you do not meet the requirements for virtually proctored exams, prefer to take your exams in person,/or have an unavoidable scheduling conflict, be sure to contact me as soon as possible. Alternative testing arrangements can be made for virtual or in-person proctoring at a testing center, given adequate notice and depending on testing center capacity and availability. Scheduling appointments with a testing center and communicating with the instructor are the responsibilities of the student, as well as paying any associated fees for using a non-PCC testing center.

If you have accommodations through Accessible Ed & Disability Resources at PCC, don't hesitate to get in touch with me so we can discuss your specific accommodations and how I can best support you.

If you have any questions or concerns about virtually proctored exams, please feel free to contact me.

In this class, we'll do our best to build a supportive, caring learning community! Yep, that means that together, we'll build a class community that is anti-racist, welcomes all faiths, respects both youth and age, welcomes people from the world over, supports veterans, is feminist, supports people of every sexuality, supports trans—and nonbinary people, and accommodates people everywhere on every ability spectrum.

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Technology

To participate remotely, you'll need

  • dependable internet access
  • a device with a web browser
  • Zoom capability (at least able to see and hear what's up and participate via chat - mic, and video are optional)
  • ability to upload work

If you have any questions, let me know!

We'll use freely available online software for calculations (Ti-emulator, GeoGebra, Pre-made Excel Spreadsheet, and Google Sheets).

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
