Details about this class

This course runs for 11 weeks.Jan 9 to Mar 21st.

Hello! I am excited to be teaching Math 98 this term, and I hope to make it fun and interesting as well as educational. If you are thinking of registering for my class but have any concerns that are not addressed here, feel free to email me; I would be happy to answer any questions.
mailto:ushaben.patel@pcc.edu

The course will meet remotely using Zoom! You are expected to attend regularly, Our class meetings will be recorded and you can watch the recordings any time after few hours afthe class is over

Part of the goal of the Math 58 & 98 sequence is to help you develop a growth mindset. If you believe that some people are "math people" and others aren't, and there's nothing you can do to change it, that is a fixed mindset. With a growth mindset, you are more likely to take on a new challenge because you see it as an opportunity to improve. Instead of saying "I can't do this..." and giving up, you say "I can't do this... yet!" and keep working. Here's a 2-minute YouTube video about growth mindset.

I have taught Math 98 Since Winter 2020. I love teaching remotely using Zoom. I intend to run things in a similar manner but may make some minor changes based on my experience. (Growth mindset alert!) Here is the link for old syllabus. It will give you some idea of what to expect.
Math 98 Syllabus

Another big part of Math 58 & 98 is students working together in small groups during our class meetings. You are expected to attend the online class meetings regularly and contribute productively to your group's work.

Proctored Exams: Our class will be participating in a Virtual Proctoring Pilot that is being run in collaboration with Math, Online Learning, and the Testing Center. The exams in this class will be proctored virtually in Zoom with me, your instructor, on the following dates and times:  TO BE CHANGED

  • Exam 1 on Monday, Oct 30 from 8:30AM to 10:50AM using Zoom
  • Exam 2 on Wednesday, Dec 13 from 8:30AM to 10:50AM using Zoom

Review the Student Guide to Virtually Proctored Exams in Zoom for important information and requirements. Please make every concerted effort to attend the scheduled virtually proctored exams. If you do not meet the requirements for virtually proctored exams, prefer to take your exams in-person, and/or have an unavoidable scheduling conflict, please contact me as soon as possible to discuss alternative arrangements. With adequate notice, alternative testing arrangements can be made for virtual or in-person proctoring at a testing center. Scheduling appointments with a testing center is the responsibility of the student, as well as paying any associated fees with using a non-PCC testing center.

If you have accommodations through Accessible Ed & Disability Resources at PCC, please contact me so we can discuss your specific accommodations and how I can best support you.

If you have any questions or concerns about virtually proctored exams, please feel free to contact me.

Technology

We will use D2L Brightspace for some online components, with homework done in the online platform Connect Math. We will also use the spreadsheet program Google Sheets (or Microsoft Excel if you prefer). The free online graphing program Desmos will also be helpful. It is okay if you do not have a printer or scanner, but you may need to use a scanning app such as Adobe Scan to submit some handwritten assignments.

You MUST have a ALEKS Math account to do the online homework and quizzes. If you have a ALEKS account from Math 58, you can use that same account for no additional $.

Class: MTH 98 Math Literacy II - Winter 2024  INTERACTIVE -CRN 11993.  Class Code: 3DMXC-VM63C

Note: You could avoid buying the textbook and purchase an access code that does include an e-textbook. However, in my opinion you will be better served by buying a print textbook.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
