Details about this class

Hello! I am excited to be teaching Math 95, and I hope to make it fun and interesting as well as educational. If you are thinking of registering for my class but have any concerns that are not addressed here, feel free to email me; I would be happy to answer any questions. mailto:morgan.chase@pcc.edu

See https://www.pcc.edu/staff/morgan-chase/ for more information about me and how I operate.

Here is the syllabus for my Spring 2023 Math 95 course; I intend to run the Spring 2024 course in almost exactly the same way, with minor modifications. Math 95 Syllabus Spring 2023 (pdf; you must be logged into your PCC Google account to access the file)

This course will be taught with the flipped classroom model, which means that you will be expected to do some pre-work -- watching some short videos or perhaps reading the textbook and then completing a short comprehension quiz -- so that you have an understanding of the basics of the new topic before attending the online class meeting. Then during class, we can build on that knowledge base. This 3-minute YouTube video is a good introduction to flipped classrooms: The Flipped Classroom Model.

Proctored Exams: The exams in this class will be in person and are scheduled for the following dates and times:

  • Midterm Exam on Wednesday, May 1 from 2:00PM to 4:00PM
  • Final Exam on Wednesday, June 12 from 2:00PM to 4:00PM

If you have an unavoidable scheduling conflict, please contact me as soon as possible. Alternative testing arrangements can be made for in-person proctoring at a testing center given adequate notice and depending on testing center capacity and availability. Scheduling appointments with a testing center and communicating with the instructor is the responsibility of the student, as well as paying any associated fees with using a non-PCC testing center.

If you have accommodations through Accessible Ed & Disability Resources at PCC, please contact me so we can discuss your specific accommodations and how I can best support you.

If you have any questions or concerns about proctored exams, please feel free to contact me.

Technology

We will meet in person at Cascade campus, but we will make extensive use of D2L Brightspace for some online components and WeBWorK for online homework. We will also use the online graphing utility Desmos; you can access it through a web browser at desmos.com or download the app. You may also need to use Google Docs. All of these applications are free of charge.

You are not required have a printer, but you will occasionally need to be able to scan papers or take pictures of them; I recommend the free scanning app Adobe Scan.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.

Students with disabilities

Students with disabilities should notify their instructor if accommodations are needed to take this class. For information about technologies that help people with disabilities taking Online based classes please visit the Disability Services website.
