Hi!

I am looking forward to working with you as we learn some super cool math.  Below are some important details about our class that you should know before the term begins.

Please purchase the MTH 111 Course Packet (Blank Lecture Outlines) from the Bookstore, as you will be taking notes and submitting them for grading.

Two virtually proctored exams will be required for class. 

Virtually Proctored Exams: Proctored exams are one of many assessment tools used in MTH to assess student learning. Our class will be participating in a Virtual Proctoring Pilot that is being run in collaboration with Math, Online Learning, and the Testing Center.  Please review the Student Guide to Virtually Proctored Exams in Zoom for important information and requirements.

The exams in this class will be proctored virtually in Zoom with me, your instructor, on the following *tentative* dates and times:

• Midterm on Friday, May 3, 2024 from 10am - 12:20pm on Zoom
• Final Exam on Monday, June 10, 2024 from 4pm - 6:20pm on Zoom
• Dates above are tentative and may change but you will have the option of using the PCC testing proctors to reschedule if you have a conflict with a testing day/time.

Virtually proctored exams require:

1. a modern computer (desktop or laptop) with a supported operating system (Windows or Mac)
2. a broadband internet provider or mobile carrier with LTE or better service
3. a microphone,
4. a detachable webcam or mobile device (such as a smartphone, tablet, etc.), and
5. a quiet, isolated, well-lit location. 

If you do not meet the requirements listed above, prefer to take your exams in-person, and/or have an unavoidable scheduling conflict, please contact me as soon as possible; with adequate notice,  alternative testing arrangements can be made at a testing center. Scheduling appointments with a testing center is the responsibility of the student, as well as paying any associated fees with using a non-PCC testing center. 

If you have accommodations through Accessible Ed & Disability Resources, please contact AEDR to have accommodations sent to me and plan on meeting with me so we can discuss your specific accommodations.

*Virtual proctoring means having your exam proctored by an approved proctor on Zoom on a specific day and time. 

**In-person proctoring means having your exam proctored by an approved proctor at an in-person testing facility on a specific day and time.  This will be the same exam as the rest of the class but you are able to come into a physical location to have it proctored.

In order to be successful in this course, you will need to be comfortable following written directions, be a self-directed learner, be comfortable with technology, have good time management skills, and be able to spend at least 15-20 hours per week completing required math work. If you think you will have trouble meeting these criteria, you should register for a traditional, face-to-face class.

You will NOT need a graphing calculator for this course, but you will need a scientific calcualtor for exams and assignments. We will use a free online graphing software where approrpriate outside of exams.

We will be using the online math program ALEKS for our class.  It will cost about $40 and if you continue on to MTH 112, access to 112 ALEKS is included.
