Details about this class

Getting Started

JPN102 introduces Japanese language and culture, emphasizes effective communicative skills in written and spoken language and examines the practice, product and perspective of Japanese culture. It is the second course of a three-course sequence.

Course Details

JPN102 is taught in Japanese immersion. In class, students and the instructor will use only Japanese during the instruction time. At each lesson, there will be opportunities to ask questions or hear class announcements in English for 10 to 20 minutes.  The main components of course requirements are Attendance, Participation, Assignments, Presentation, Oral Interview & Quizzes.

We have classes twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00pm to 3:20pm to work together, discuss the course materials, practice conversations by pair or group work and answer your questions.  Attendance and active participation are mandatory for this class.  You are allowed three no-questions-asked absences over the course of the term.  For each class if you miss over those three class sessions, your course grade will be affected. No make-up class for your absences.

Required Materials:

  • Textbook: Genki I -  An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese  (Third Edition)

  • Workbook: Genki I -  An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese  (Third Edition)

Technology

This course is taught in-person, not by remote. Students are not required to have any technical skill during the class period. For the entire course, however, you need a laptop, tablet, or personal computer with access to the internet/wi-fi. You need to check your PCC email regularly. I will post homework assignments, internet links, and handouts from class in D2L. You will also have online listening and recording for homework. You will be able to submit your assignments from D2L, if you make them into a PDF file.

D2L Brightspace will be the platform used for PCC classes. Even though you are not required to have technical abilities, I recommend that you study how to use D2L Brightspace before attending the first class. If you have technical problems, please go to the PCC Student Help Desk https://www.pcc.edu/help-desk/

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
