Details about this class
How This Class Works
This course is designed as a hybrid, capstone-style experience that brings together everything you’ve learned in your GIS Certificate or Geomatics AAS program.
Class Format
-
We meet once a week for a 3-hour in-person session. The rest of your work happens independently or with your project team.
-
You will be paired with a classmate and matched with a community partner to complete a term-long geospatial project.
Capstone Model
-
This class is student-centered and project-based. You’ll be applying the full range of geospatial knowledge and skills you’ve developed throughout your program.
-
Because it relies heavily on prior coursework, this class is intended to be taken at the end of your GIS Certificate or Geomatics AAS.
What You’ll Learn
Course content focuses on the professional skills needed to carry a project from start to finish, including:
-
Project management
-
Ethics and responsible data use
-
Problem-solving strategies
-
Creating clear project documentation
-
Designing workflow diagrams
Review a Sample Course Calendar.
Working With Community Partners
-
The instructor will set up project opportunities, but you’re also welcome to propose your own community partner—just check in with the instructor before committing.
-
The final project you complete with your partner will serve as a strong portfolio piece for future job or internship applications.
Technology
There is no additional technology required for this class.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
