Details about this class

This is a combined format course. There is class meeting each week on Wednesday morning from 9:30-10:50am on Zoom, which you can access through the course page on D2L. Monday morning we will meet in person at Rock Creek campus for our hands-on lab from 9:30-12:20am every week. We will primarily be covering new lecture material and having group conversations during the Zoom meetings and working together in groups for a hands-on lab activity on Monday mornings. The assignments each week will consist of labs, homework assignments, discussions, and quizzes.

I am very excited to share my love of environmental science with you and I look forward to answering any questions you have about the course! Please feel welcome to email me at megan.faust@pcc.edu to talk more!

Technology

1. Some of the labs will require you to plot data and make drawings. The labs will be provided as Google Doc files. You have a few options on how to work with and submit these files. Three options are:

  • Work directly in Google Docs and submit as a Google Doc,
  • Export the Google Doc into a Word or PDF document and complete in one of those programs,
  • Print out the labs, complete them by hand, and scan them into a PDF file.
  • If you do not have a scanner, it's often possible to use a smartphone and free apps or software to convert photos of hand-written labs into PDFs.

Either way, you need to be comfortable using and editing digital documents and need to be able to include drawings in the digital files which you will upload as to this course.

3. You should know how to take a screen shot.

Internet Speed: Some of the data processing in this course (mostly through Google Earth Pro) requires an internet connection and speed beyond the minimum required for PCC online courses. You can view PCC's general internet and technical requirements on the Online Learning Start Guide. We suggest using a high-speed internet connection that would otherwise be appropriate for streaming music or movies. If your internet speed is slower (but still meets PCC's general criteria), it should be possible to still complete the work, but you might experience general lagging in response time and visual components.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.

Online & Remote Teaching Technical Requirements

Please be sure to read the quick guide to Online Learning technical requirements.

Students with disabilities

Students with disabilities should notify their instructor if accommodations are needed to take this class. For information about technologies that help people with disabilities taking Online based classes please visit the Disability Services website.

Online Prerequisite | Start Guide for Online Learning

Before you take your first online class at PCC, you must complete the start guide for online learning. The start guide will help you decide if online classes are right for you. Once you complete the start guide, you will be eligible to register for online classes.

The Start Guide is not required for Remote classes but strongly recommended.
