Details about this class

Content

All the lecture content is available as pre-recorded videos, self-paced programming work with zybooks, and self-paced reading of the PC hardware textbook. Most of your "learning" will take place through these activities. Most of the zoom class time is given over to class business, questions, and extra programming examples.

Meeting times:.

Attendance is required for the first meeting and for any times where there is interactive work expected. You'll be notified in advance. The lectures are recorded and those recordings are available after the zoom session ends. Attendance in the subsequent zoom classes is recommended but there's no real way for me to assess how much attention people are paying so I don't record attendance on zoom past the first week.

Some of the class time is given over to individual and group help.

Technology

The programming is done through the zybooks interactive textbook. This is required work and will take somewhere between 2 and 5 hours of your time each week. A portion of the scheduled class meeting time is set aside for you to work on this.

You can sign up for the paid zybooks service at:

learn.zybooks.com

enter code:   PCCEET178SmithSpring2024

You can also buy an access code at the PCC bookstore instead of directly from the website.

There is a linux module in the class and you'll need access to a computer running the linux operating system. You can run what's called a virtual machine on your windows or mac computer that will give you access to linux. If you have another computer such as a raspberry PI or system running linux, you can use that as well. There are websites that give access to a linux shell but those aren't as useful as running your own virtual machine.

In the past we've used the raspberry PI (about $100) as the platform for linux but those are in short supply. If you can find one, you can use that and support is provided for those using one.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
