Details about this class
This course is designed to decolonize (deconstruct thoughts and values that derive from a colonial way of thinking) the way in which we co-learn and critically think about teaching through the lens of race, ethnicity, class, disability, gender, and sexual orientation. We will explore these concepts through the context of our Education system.
We will meet via zoom each Wednesday from 5 - 6:30 pm, starting April 1st. Attendance each week in addition to active participation in course discussions, assignments and projects is mandatory. Our text for this class is Rethinking Multicultural Education, Teaching for Racial and Cultural Justice (3rd edition). You can find this at the PCC bookstore or support a local bookstore to purchase this text.
This course is discussion based and built in community and collaboration. We will spend plenty of time creating an inclusive and thoughtful community to have discussions. There is limited lecture in this course and we will embrace co-teaching, multimodal methods of learning, and projects. The course requires active participation in the content, individual and group reflection on challenging topics and practical application of content to education issues. All students in the course will have the opportunity to practice applicable culturally responsive teaching methods.
Please know that my first priority is your well being so that you can be ready to learn. Therefore, if there is anything that is affecting your ability to participate in the class, please do not hesitate to reach out.
