Details about this class

We are happy to be able to offer this asynchronous online course, meaning that all course components (lectures, assignments, quizzes, final exam) are online through D2L (no live class meetings), and homework and the lab are done through separate web sites. You will be able to move through the course on your own schedule as long as you complete the work by the due date each week. It's a complex course, so organizational skills and attention to detail are essential!

This 5-credit course includes both lecture and lab, so it’s like two courses in one. It requires 15-20 hours of your time each week to do well since it is equivalent to an on-campus chemistry course. And I’m here to help every step of the way!

You’ll do the labs at home with a purchased lab kit. It’s expensive, but it’s the only way we can offer a valid, accredited chemistry course online – and it’s pretty fun! You will post 3 photos of yourself (selfies) doing the experiment each week. I’ll send a class email out to registered students the week before the class opens with all the ordering information as well as the course syllabus.

Homework will be completed via the OWLv2 web site provided by the textbook publisher, Cengage. The OWL access code includes a digital textbook (no need to buy a hard copy of the textbook). OWL access may be purchased through the Bookstore or directly from Cengage. If purchased through Cengage, it includes a short trial period before you must pay.

Please check your PCC email regularly for updates from PCC and your instructors. To forward your PCC email to another account, go to PCC gmail Settings, then select the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab at the top.

Please contact me at stacey.fiddler@pcc.edu if you have any questions!

Technology

  • Reliable internet connection to access D2L Brightspace, PCC’s Learning Management System, as well as the web sites for the OWL online homework and the HOL/SI lab platform where you will complete your lab reports.
  • Word processing application such as Google Docs (available with your PCC gmail account) or Microsoft Word (Office 365 available free to students at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/products/office).
  • Camera to take pictures of written work. Just use your smartphone! A scanner also works.
  • Method to get multiple pages of written work into a single pdf file such as the free AdobeScan app or a scanner.
  • I offer individual Zoom appointments/student hours, so speakers, microphone, and webcam are optional but recommended.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
