This course section will include participants who are medically vulnerable and have heightened safety concerns surrounding COVID infection, as well as participants who work in high-exposure healthcare settings. I will be masked at all times, and I look forward to supporting your educational journey, as safely as possible. We also strongly advocate for all students to be vaccinated for safety in the classroom and other group settings.

Overview

Thank you for your interest in this course. Prior to committing to your registration decision, please consider these important course policies ...

  • Because this is a 4-credit lab science course, you should expect to devote a minimum of 3 hours each week to lecture instruction and 3 hours each week to lab instruction. This estimate of hours does not include reading, studying, or independent work time. Typically, students should expect to invest ~20 total hours per week to A&P.
  • As with all science courses, you will need to be extremely self-motivated and organized. Students are expected to enter the course on D2L several times a week, thoroughly review content in the Course Information module, complete coursework in weekly lecture and lab modules, participate in weekly class meetings, check email, and read announcements. 
  • This course uses a flipped hybrid model. This means that students complete the first portion of each weekly online learning module and corresponding materials (ex. reading the lecture text, reviewing lab materials, and watching lecture recordings), prior to attending the weekly scheduled class meeting. Then, during our weekly class meeting we will have activities, assignments, practice, and group work to solidify the content. You will need to come to class prepared and ready to participate in active learning. After each weekly class meeting, you will complete any remaining portion of the weekly online learning module. 
  • You are welcome to register for this section, if you can attend class during week 1, as well as participate in most weekly class meetings for the term. In cases of illness or emergency, we will make necessary arrangements, but please do not register for this class if you already know you cannot regularly attend in person.

Online Portion of Class

  • Learning content is organized into weekly lecture and lab modules available to students on D2L. 
  • Modules are organized chronologically to reflect what you should complete before or after the weekly class meetings.
    • Students complete readings and review recorded lectures, before attending each weekly class meeting.
    • After each weekly class meeting, there will be some online work to submit. 

In-person Portion of Class

  • Class meetings are scheduled once a week.
  • Lecture class meetings consist of student question and answer time, critical thinking exercises, collaborative discussions on recorded lecture content, and assessments. Graded lecture assignments include lecture quizzes, case studies, discussions, and lecture exams. 
  • Lab class meetings consist of hands-on learning, through the use of anatomical models, microscopy, animal dissection, physiological exercises, and computer based exercises, as well as assessments. Graded lab assessments include lab quizzes and lab practical exams. 
  • Please do not attend a weekly class meeting if you are sick, in order to protect your fellow classmates and instructor. We can make alternative arrangements for a limited number of absences due to illness.

  • Because the curriculum for A&P includes topics such as racial disparities and social injustices in healthcare, it is important to demonstrate empathy in our interactions with each other. We cultivate a supportive and collaborative learning environment by demonstrating reciprocal respect, kindness, and patience, as we navigate our way through the course.   • This class covers an incredible amount of detailed content and is quite challenging, but you are capable of succeeding, and I am here to support you every way I can. Please carefully plan your schedule to determine when and how you will study for this course. There are a lot of resources to help you. I will open the Course Information module on D2L before the term starts, and it will present some study strategies you can consider before starting the course. You will also meet some fantastic classmates to collaborate with, and PCC has free tutoring services available too. By working together in community, we will support everyone's success. 

Books

  • Lecture Materials
    • Feel free to use any edition of the textbook for the class: (Saladin) Anatomy & Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function. Used books are fine too. Connect is the publisher's online resource, and it comes with a new textbook purchase. Connect is not required for the course, but it is a useful resource for both lecture and lab. You can also choose to purchase directly from the publisher an eText version of the textbook with Connect, for a lesser price than the print book with Connect available through the bookstore. 
    • If you cannot afford a textbook, there is a free OpenStax version you can use. It may not be the same quality or contain all the exact explanations as the publisher's text, but it should suffice. 
    • Completing the assigned textbook reading is a required and essential part of the course. 
  • Lab Materials
    • We started using a free lab resource, which is essentially a list of your lab learning objectives. It doesn't contain instructional explanations or high-quality, labeled images like a traditional lab manual. You will rely mainly on your textbook for context and meaning, plus you can use atlases and old lab manuals available in the lab. An electronic version of the lab resource will be made available to students for free on the D2L course page. You have the option to pay for a print version if you prefer. 
  • The same lecture textbook and free lab resource are used throughout the entire BI 231-233 A&P course series.

Technology

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.

Online Prerequisite | Start Guide for Online Learning

Before you take your first online class at PCC, you must complete the start guide for online learning. The start guide will help you decide if online classes are right for you. Once you complete the start guide, you will be eligible to register for online classes.

The Start Guide is not required for Remote classes but strongly recommended.
