Details about this class

Welcome! This is the first of a 3-course Anatomy and Physiology series. The lecture portion of the course focuses on physiology, while the laboratory portion of the course focuses primarily on anatomy. So it is like taking two different (but related) classes at the same time, which requires a huge time commitment.

This class is a hybrid. Lecture PowerPoint slides, extensive study guides, and recorded lectures will be provided on our course's D2L site at least a week ahead of class. Our Tuesday meeting times from 5-6:20 PM are Recitations where we will go over study guide questions and have group activities. These will be over chapter materials you have already studied on your own using online lecture videos, the book, and suggested education videos. Recitations are optional but RECOMMENDED, except for exam days. The first class is an exception. There are no recordings to watch for the first class and coming to the first class is required for attendance confirmation. All lecture exams are scheduled during Recitation times and are in-person.

BI 112 is a prerequisite for BI 231. BI 121 is not a prerequisite for BI 231.

For the lecture, you're required to purchase one book. It can be an older edition of this text (look at used book stores, online, etc.) or the newest version that the PCC bookstore carries. This textbook is called Anatomy and Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function by Saladin. I highly recommend having a textbook as it will serve you well for the next 9 months and may become a life-long reference book for you.

Lab time is spent working hands-on with microscopes and models. It is in-person and attendance is required. Lab exams are in the form of "practicals." These are made up of 26 stations where you will answer three questions about models laid out or microscope slides.

The link to the lab manual will be available on the D2L page a week before classes commence. If you want to get a head start on the material, memorize the names of human anatomical body regions until you're completely comfortable with them, and then the names and locations of all bones in the human body.

Technology

Lectures and class materials are found on the course D2L page.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
