Details about this class

Thanks for your interest in BI 101 (CRN 20550). Here are some additional details about how the course will be structured:

Books? You have two options!

The primary text is “Biology: Life on Earth” 12th edition by Audesirk, T., Audesirk, G., & Byers, B. E. (2019). Pearson - while this text is in the 12th edition older editions work just fine & are often available for much less. You do not need access to the online “Mastering Biology” site so you don’t need a new edition of this text. Used and old editions are great!

Optional Text: The lecture 'textbook' OpenStax’s Concepts of Biology is available for free online (you can search ‘openstax concepts of biology’ or follow the link above)

The lab ‘manual’ will be supplied as electronic .pdf files for each week’s lab. The first week’s lab file will be printed for you. The rest can be downloaded and printed at home or at PCC (using your PCC free printing allowance).

In-Person Lecture (Monday and Wednesdays from 10:30-11:50a)

Our weekly in-person lecture time will be dedicated to…

  • Building an understanding of core biology concepts through lectures
  • Working on applying these concepts to novel problems
  • Completing in class activities to check understanding
  • Taking in class portions of midterm and final exams (there will also be a take home portion of these exams that is open notes & open book)

 In-Person Lab (Wednesday from 1:00-3:50p)

We will have weekly hands-on laboratory activities corresponding to the lecture material. Here we will practice data-driven inquiry into biological questions, often using specialized materials and tools. You will turn in the lab assignment after completing each lab.
