Details about this class

How does Remote/Hybrid Learning Work?:

This class will be a mixture of Zoom meeting time and At-Home Asynchronous work. Asynchronous means that you are responsible for completing the work on your own time each week. In a remote/hybrid course, you will get out of the course what you put into it.

For your asynchronous (at home) work, I will be using various tactics. You will be assigned videos to prepare for projects or the next week's course, small sketchbook exercises, discussions, and/or quizzes. If you don’t do the asynchronous work you may be confused in the Zoom sessions or miss sketchbook exercises.

How does this class differ from an In-person Painting Class?:

If you were taking this class in person, your class period would be 2, 3-hour courses twice weekly. We meet for 2, 2 hr. Zoom sessions twice weekly. This means that you are responsible for 2 hours of independent asynchronous (at-home) learning as well as 3-4 hours of homework a week. The homework expectations are the same as an In-Person course.

Another big difference is that a lot of the ongoing feedback happens via the discussion boards and during scheduled critiques.

Time Commitment:

Creating a painting is not a fast process. You should expect to spend prolonged periods on one exercise or project. You will have around three to four hours of homework a week on top of the 4 Zoom class hours a week and 2 at-home asynchronous hours. Set aside a minimum of 6-7 hours a week to work on this class outside of Zoom.(ballpark)

Course Overview:

This class is a 4 credit-hour studio-based course. In this painting class, you will be exposed to a variety of painting techniques, strategies, and visual principles. Through guided assignments, a variety of smaller studies, and demonstrations you will experiment with the formal properties of color, shape, form, texture, and space. Through a combination of personal projects, ideation, discussions, and critique you will develop a language to understand painting as both a formal construction and a tool for expression. In-class group Critique will engage us in the interpretation, evaluation, and analysis of works while developing a more sophisticated vocabulary and strengthening problem-solving skills.

The learning outcomes of this course will be mapped to their developed rubrics. They may shift with the needs of the students as the course progresses. Possible learning outcomes for the course include:

Main Course Components

Asynchronous Work (At-Home Work):

  • You will be responsible for this portion of the course. The At-Home work will vary in it’s scope but will include things such as Watching preparatory videos, class discussions, smaller exercises, and quizzes. If you don’t complete the at-home work you may miss out on points or be confused during class time.

Synchronous Work (Zoom Time):

  • This time will be for presentations, demonstrations, smaller studies, break-out rooms, and individual meetings. There will be some work time on larger projects during Zoom time but not tons. Attendance is tracked.

Exercises:

  • This work will be introduced in class but happening (mostly) asynchronously. They will expand the skills that we have been covering in class. Each exercise will have a different set of requirements and explore a certain set of skills. All exercises are graded on a rubric.
    • Redo’s and do-overs will be accepted for the Exercises/Sketchbook. If you hand the project in late you won’t receive timely feedback and thoughtful critique from your classmates or myself.

Signature Assignment:

  • This project will consist of a conceptual theme and utilize multiple skills introduced in class. It will include an ideation process, technical skill-building, personal expression, and an interpretation of the concept. A short writing will be turned in with the drawing.
    • The creation of sketches/ideation is included in the grading rubric for this project and there is an individual meeting to help you prepare.
    • You will want to spend about 25-35 hours working on the individual project including ideation and production of the piece.
    • This piece will be worth between 30-40 pts and the writing is worth 20 pts
    • This drawing and accompanying writing will have a set due date and it will be graded on a rubric.
