Details about this class

This class in painting the human figure takes a compositional approach. It is not an anatomy class: the figure and everything around the figure are given equal consideration. This involves studying the strategies and logic of figure paintings of the past and present and then applying these to original paintings of the model. By making a version of another artist's work to understand these strategies, you can then apply these to paint a live model via Zoom.  The models will be in real time and will be clothed. The approaches range from high realism to abstraction. My goal is to give you diverse approaches to painting the figure so you will have the skills to be able to continue painting people on your own and combine these various approaches in your own way.

This is a class for beginning and intermediate painters. You will be assigned two paintings per week, though reworking paintings is highly encouraged to achieve an A.

This is a remote, synchronous class where live participation for 4 hours/week is a requirement. There is an additional online component with the expectation of 1-2 hours/ week involving discussions about painting.

Technology

Because the class is conducted in real time via Zoom, WIFI, webcam and mic as well as a quiet place to work are required. You will also need to photograph your work in order to submit it for credit.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
