Details about this class

Hello! Thanks for your interest in ART 206: Global Art History III!

In this class, we'll explore art globally from the 1700s through the 21st century. We'll practice analyzing examples of all sorts of visual culture, revealing social, religious, political, economic and technological changes in societies. This is a completely revised art history class that takes a global approach to media, artists, genres, movements, and objects. I'm so excited to teach with this material this term!

Here's some important information about this class:

ART 206 is entirely asynchronous and online, which means we won't have remote or in-person class meetings. Instead, each week a new module will open that allows you to learn about a different topic. While there are no weekly meetings via Zoom, you will have regular online interaction with your classmates through discussion posts. I will also share information in our syllabus about how to meet with me during office hours.

Learning activities include looking at art and analyzing it based on what you've learned from readings, videos, and close observations. Weekly assessments are different each week and include discussions or interactive assignments. There are also three quizzes and a final reflective essay.

Textbook: There is a required textbook, and you can order it through the bookstore. You will also have supplemental material in our online course shell to support your learning. Here's information about the textbook and which version of it you might consider purchasing:

  • Textbook Title: Robertson, Hutton, et al., The History of Art: A Global View: Prehistory to 1500 (Volumes 1 and 2), Norton/Thames and Hudson, 2021. You only need Volume 2 (1300 to the present) for this class.
  • ISBNs: Each version of the text has a different ISBN, so here's what I've found about each:
    • Softcover print version, VOLUME 2 ONLY: ISBN 9780500293560
    • Digital version, VOLUME 2 ONLY: ISBN 9780500844397
    • Digital COMPLETE (COMBINES VOLUMES 1 AND 2) text with InQuisitive, 180 day access: ISBN 9780500844311
    • Printed COMPLETE (COMBINES VOLUMES 1 AND 2) text, Prehistory to Present with InQuisitive: ISBN 9780500022375

There will also be copies of the entire textbook on reserve at the Cascade and Sylvania libraries, so you can still access the textbook without purchasing it.

I look forward to working with you this coming term, and please reach out to me with any questions!
