Details about this class

Course Overview:

This class is a 4 credit hour studio-based course. In this class, you will develop foundational drawing skills that are rooted in observation, process, and conceptual ideation. You can expect to explore various drawing techniques, strategies, and materials while strengthening the sight/sense connection. Through a combination of projects, drawing exercises, and lectures/discussions/videos you will develop a language to understand drawing as both formal construction and a tool for expression.  We will discuss a variety of historical and contemporary artists to place drawing into a wider conceptual and more equitable framework.

Time Commitment:

Creating a drawing is not a fast process. You should expect to spend prolonged periods of time on one in-class exercise or drawing project. You will have around three to four hours of homework a week on top of the 4 zoom hours a week and 2 at- home asynchronous hours. Set aside a minimum of 6-7 hours a week to work on this class(ballpark)

Main Course Components

Asynchronous Work (At-Home Work):

  • You will be responsible for this portion of the course. Each week I will be giving you a few tasks to complete outside of the course. I will be practicing something called a “flipped classroom”. Some of the lecture and technical information I previously delivered in the classroom will be presented via videos and/or other resources. We will, then, put those skills into practice during zoom meetings and on exercises. It is imperative that you do your asynchronous work. You will have some quizzes, discussions, and sketchbook exercises as asynchronous work.

Synchronous Work (Zoom Time):

  • This work will be smaller works, studies, and in-process pieces that will primarily be done in the sketchbook. These will be learning works and will be handed into the Virtual Studio Discussions folder for immediate feedback and advice.

Virtual Studio Discussions

  • Virtual Studio Discussions are tied to the Syncronous Work. You will turn in each days activity into the discussion board for feedback. This will be part of your grade at the end of the course. The Virtual Studio Discussion will be graded - not on skill or completion but on attempt and improvement shown.  You will also be required to comment on a minimum of 3 fellow students activities over the course of the term.

Exercises:

  • This work will be introduced in class but happening (mostly) asynchronously. They will be expanding the skills that we have been covering in class. Each exercise will have a different set of requirements and explore a certain set of skills. All exercises are graded on a rubric and will range between 15 and 35 points.
    • Redo’s and do-overs will be accepted for the Exercises. If you hand the project in late you won’t receive timely feedback and thoughtful critique from your classmates or myself.

Signature Assignment:

  • This project will consist of a conceptual theme and utilize multiple skills introduced in class. It will include an ideation process, technical skill-building, personal expression, and an interpretation of the concept. A short writing will be turned in with the drawing.
    • The creation of sketches/ideation is included in the grading rubric for this project and there is an individual meeting to help you prepare.
    • You will want to spend about 20-25 hours working on the individual project including ideation and production of the piece.
    • This piece will be worth between 30-40 pts and the writing is worth 20 pts
    • This drawing and accompanying writing will have a set due date and it will be graded on a rubric. Redo’s or late work are not accepted for the Signature Assignment
