Thank you for your interesting in ART116 Basic Design Color Foundations. I look forward to working with you and making some discoveries about color.

Basic Design 116 – Color Foundations is a combination of Remote instruction and Asynchronous learning. We will come together Fridays from 10-1 via Zoom for a combination of lectures, demonstrations, critiques, and one-on-one learning. Student will be responsible for their own Asynchronous learning through guided discussions, exercises, assignments, readings, Jamboard work, etc. All recordings will be saved to the Cloud Recordings Tab under Zoom in D2L. Attendance is mandatory in this class. Up to three absences are allowed for the term. Any further absences will result in an automatic re-take of the course.

There is no textbook for this course, but you will need some supplies. You can purchase the kit from the Cascade PCC bookstore — currently open Monday through Thursday, 8am-4pm and Fridays 8am-2pm. Online order customer service: Monday – Friday, 8am-2pm - 971-722-4910.

Color Foundations introduces foundational color design aesthetic knowledge and skills. Investigates a broad range of color theory, techniques, materials, and color strategies. Explores design concepts through creative problem solving with consideration to historical and contemporary perspectives. This course includes exercises and assignments that takes theory and vocabulary and physically applies them with gouache paint as well as other materials. This is an entry level course with no prior need of painting skills. There will be both synchronous and video demonstrations to help navigate the different mediums.

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Solve design problems using color theory.
  2. Solve aesthetic and material problems through appropriate use of the Elements and Principles of Design.
  3. Express connections to personal and cultural experience through color-based artwork.
  4. Assess the value and quality of personal work in relation to the practices and standards of design.
  5. Communicate through design vocabulary in order to engage in critical conversations about art and design.
