- CRN: 44266
- Credits: 3
- Notes: 2h in Zoom and 1h self pace
Details about this class
This is an introductory, survey-style course covering an extremely wide and actively advancing group of three subjects: general introduction to computers, computer networking and Python programming. Contents are not difficult, but there are a lot of them. Learning will center around students reading and conducting interactive activities in the textbook, with lectures, homework and tests all supporting such activities.
This is a 4-credit class for which the college expects a total of 12 hours of in-class and out-of-class work. There is a two-hour lecture session focusing on guiding textbook learning activities and on selected difficult topics, and a two-hour self-paced study session, each week. The class schedule incorrectly omitted the self-paced study session. However, past experience indicates that way more time is required of an average student due to the vast amount of reading and activities. It is therefore critical for the student to plan well and spread the workload throughout a week and throughout the term.

Python IDE
Students are advised to install a Python Integrated Development Environment (IDE) on their computer for their python learning activities. You don't learn programming without a place for you to enter, run and debug your programs. We will be using both Spyder and Jupyter Notebook through Anaconda in class. These are free and highly popular python IDEs within the scientific and data science communities. If you have existing IDEs that you are used to, you can keep using yours without any inconvenience.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
