Greetings!

In this class we will consider strategies for students in multilingual classrooms with a focus on "Sheltered Instruction", a protocol to modify instruction in ways that best serve the needs of multilingual learners, and ultimately ALL learners. Learning (or even reviewing) these critical elements of instruction will assist all educators in creating more effective curriculum and delivery. Students will have the opportunity to create lesson plans to apply the concepts of Sheltered Instruction. The course will also have weekly readings and discussions about the cultural challenges multilingual learners face in US schools.

This is a remote and online class that meets on Mondays from 5- 6:20 PM.

A variety of materials will be provided in the course. The required texts for the course are available in the PCC bookstore or online (used copies are cheaper):

  • Echevarria, Vogt, & Short (2017) Making Content Comprehensible for Second Language Learners. The SIOP Model. Boston, MA: Allyn & Bacon. 5th edition.  (used or earlier editions are fine)
  • Stephen Cary. Working with Second Language learners: Answers to teachers' Top Ten Questions (USED is fine)
  • All other  instructional articles and videos will be embedded in the course.
  • Igoa, C. (1995). The Inner World of the Immigrant Child. Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. (This will be available through the course shell and is FREE through the PCC library!)

We will use google docs for most of our shared work.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
