Irish Set Dancing Fundamentals: County Clare
Learn County Clare style foundational techniques, accompanied by traditional music. Step-by-step instruction is followed by called dances and social dancing. Final class is a field trip to a community dance with live music. All levels welcome. No partner required.
Irish set dancing is a community-based social dance tradition, similar to American square dancing, where groups of dancers move through called figures together in a welcoming, energetic atmosphere. Learn the core skills needed to confidently participate in a ceili, the traditional Irish social dance gathering. The dances taught in this course come from the County Clare tradition of the west of Ireland and are danced to the lively rhythms of reels, jigs, and hornpipes. Clare is especially known for its rich musical heritage, its lively tunes, and the percussive step dancing that often accompanies traditional sets. Over the past 30 years, Maldon has had the opportunity to learn directly from some of the keepers of this tradition, bringing back steps, stories, and dances learned from them into the classroom. Through repetition and group dancing, students build coordination, musicality, and connection with fellow dancers while developing skills they can continue to enjoy for years to come.
