Public Art and Memory
Explore public art, memory, emotion and place. Visit outdoor installations and investigate how history, identity and geography intersect. Three metro-area field trips during class, which include up to 2.5 miles of walking.
Use your senses and emotions as tools to understand the ways public art can evoke the past in the present, shape our sense of place, and help us experience an emotional connection with the land we live on. Identify strategies that public artists use. This class will be experiential and discussion-based, focusing on the encounter between students with one another and with the art, rather than on information delivery. Fields trips: 10/4 Sandy River Delta Park; 10/11 Portland Expo Center; 10/18 South Park Blocks.
