Details about this class
Welcome!!! If you have ever taken BI101 or high school biology, you are ready to take BI102. We get to learn about DNA and genes and inheritance, oh my! **If you took high school biology recently and want to jump into BI102 without 101, send me an email and we can figure out if that might work**
Everyone in the class should feel valued, included and welcome. I can't wait to meet you and learn with you!!!! Here are a few pictures of me and welcome videos
*Zero Cost* Lecture & Lab Materials: *Don't buy anything!* Our textbook is OER (open educational resource) and you can access it online for free (https://openstax.org/books/biology-2e/pages/1-introduction). The lab materials are in our D2L shell. You did not need to purchase ANYTHING for this class!
Attendance:
Lecture and lab both meet on Wednesdays at the Rock Creek Campus. Lecture is hybrid so you will watch lecture videos and answer questions before class meets every Wednesday.
Project-based: This 102 is a bit unique and students generate two unique works of biology during the term. The works are based on the content and sometimes they are written papers and other times they are videos or presentations or artwork. This is usually the students favorite part of the course.
Quizzes: We will study for quizzes while we are together on Wednesdays. We have lecture/lab combined quizzes every week on the material from the week before....there are no tests except for a final.
Lab: We will do lab together every week.
Homework: Homework is due every week on Sunday night.
Thank you for considering!
Grading Criteria:
Lecture is worth 70% of the final grade and lab counts as 30% of the final grade.
Grades are assigned as follows: 90-100% A 80-89% B 70-79% C 60-69% D <60% F
Technology
Please have access to the internet and a computer that can open Google Suite, Word and PDF (have a backup computer plan). You will need to create documents in one of these formats. You may also need to convert images (gif, jpeg, png) to pdf files. There are free apps to do this (I use the free Adobe to PDF converter app).
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
Online technical requirements
Please be sure to read the quick guide to Online Learning technical requirements.
