Details about this class
THIS INTRODUCTORY ANTHROPOLOGY COURSE considers contemporary human culture from an anthropological perspective. It reviews aesthetics, economics, gender, language, kinship and marriage, politics, religion, sex and worldview (alphabetical ordering), using both cross-cultural and pan-human perspectives for historical and contemporary situations: the "then.", the "now"and the possible "future", plus their experiential aspects since everything has a time/place/person context. The structural elements of the course include discussions, a brief paper, an online search, a midterm and final, and a personal, succinct and engaging field project. The instructor is an experienced anthropologist with extensive teaching, field research and consulting activities, and includes relevant personal experiences and visuals to give a "present tense" element to the course; accordingly, the course has structure, content, continuity and a personalized focus and openness. The course prerequisites are WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores; these may be waived and audit is available.
