Manufacturing skills training focuses on solar, bioscience industries

Portland Community College’s Capital Career Center is recruiting students for its Advanced Manufacturing Skills Training.
The free eight-week program prepares people to work for new manufacturing companies moving into the Portland area, including San Francisco-based Genentech. The training will run Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., beginning April 21 at the Capital Career Center.
Interested students need to attend one of the following orientations: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., March 13, 20, 27, or April 3, Room 1509, Capital Career Center, 18624 N.W. Walker Road.
The training program is designed to upgrade math, science and other job skills quickly so that a student may progress into a credit-based PCC certificate program in bioscience, solar or microelectronics fields. The training provides a bridge to academic coursework and ultimately to higher-skilled, living-wage jobs for people who otherwise may not have access to them.
Genentech is one of the world’s leading biotech companies that engineers and manufactures drugs for serious or life-threatening medical conditions. The company is building a new plant in Hillsboro.
