Programs give workers a foot in the door

Portland Community College’s Entry-Level High Tech Skills and Manufacturing Foundations training programs are accepting applicants for their fall courses.
Both programs plan to hire from the pool of students completing the training.
Classes also will include job search workshops and assistance in placement after completion of the training. Individuals must be 18 years of age or older; have proper work authorization documents (documents will be verified); conversational English skills; and possess basic math skills.
The Entry-Level High Tech Skills Training program is a free, seven-week course at the Capital Career Center (18624 N.W. Walker Road). Orientations will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Wednesdays, Aug. 29, and Sept. 5 and 12 in Room 1509 at the center; and 1 to 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 7, at the Forest Grove Employment and Training Center (2801 Pacific Ave.).
The orientations prepare individuals for the program’s classes from Oct. 1 through Nov 16. The classes consist of an introduction to the high tech industry; a tour of the consortium’s companies; safety on the job; 20 hours of soldering training; communication and teamwork; an introduction to statistical process control; learning employer expectations; and reading, writing, math and basic computer skills. Consortium members consist of Merix Corp., Vanguard EMS, Axiom Electronics, Precision Wire Components and Synetics Solutions.
The Manufacturing Foundations Training program is a free, six-week course held at Capital Career Center. The training will be from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, Sept. 17 through Oct. 26. To be eligible, perspective students must attend the orientation from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Aug. 30, at the Capital Career Center (Room 1509).
The training in September and October consists of an introduction to working in manufacturing; a tour of the consortium’s companies; math overview; introduction to lean manufacturing; communication and teamwork building; and the use of calipers and micrometers. Consortium members include Precision Wire Components, TOSOH Quartz, XRI Testing, and Leupold and Stevens.
