Art on Alberta Street focus of PCC classes

PORTLAND, Ore. – Celebrate the emerging art scene on Alberta Street with a hands-on creative experience. Portland Community College will feature five non-credit art classes taking place in Alberta Street artists’ working studios and galleries where new ideas and new artists are emerging every day.Start with raw wool from local sheep to create your own design project in Felting. Instructor Paige Haxton will lead students to develop basic felting techniques by learning to create a hat, mittens or slippers. The class will meet from 6:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. over three Tuesdays, Jan. 11 through Jan. 25, at LP Studio, 2926 N.E. Killingsworth St. Cost is $57; all supplies are included in the cost.Let an expert introduce you to the art scene with Art Collecting on Alberta. Allan Oliver, ONDA Gallery owner, will lead students through Alberta’s innovative galleries and studios to develop criteria for building an art collection. Discover how to budget, select and display art expressing your personal individuality. The class will meet from 10 a.m. to noon over two Saturdays, Jan. 29 through Feb. 5, at the ONDA Gallery, 2215 N.E. Alberta St. Cost is $19.Artist Sonia Kasparian will teach the intricacies of her craft in Wire Sculpture. Students will work in the studio to create a 3D wire sculpture building the armature, and developing the techniques to twist, sculpt and affix wires and tie by hand. The one-day class will meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at Kaspar Art Studio, 5303 N.E. 29th. Cost is $57. Students are asked to bring needle nose pliers with cutter; wire supplies are included in the cost.In Mexican Paper Sculpture: Masks, students will work with artist Armando Olveda to learn Mexican sculpture, making an authentic mask. Learn to use colors as a Latin artist, how to create a form, paint and complete a project. The one-day class will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at Olveda Art Studio, 3713 N.
