PCC's Illumination Project awarded grant

SYLVANIA CAMPUS – The Grants Office at Portland Community College announced that the Equity Foundation has awarded the PCC Foundation a one-year, $1,300 grant to support the Illumination Project. The Equity Foundation was formed by Oregon’s lesbian and gay community, and works to promote social justice, education and the welfare of the people of Oregon.The Illumination Project, known for its interactive community performances, is a student leadership project with the dual purpose of providing students an opportunity to develop skills as activists, educators, and leaders and to provide tools for students, staff, faculty and community audiences to work toward social justice and an inclusive community.The Illumination Project is designed to engage various factions of the campus in problem-solving events around issues that traditionally have made education more difficult for minorities, women, impoverished, immigrant and sexual-minority students.The PCC Sylvania Women’s Resource Center, Sylvania Multicultural Center, Theater Arts department and student government all help sponsor the Illumination Project. Students who participate in the project receive academic credit through the Social Sciences department. This grant includes funding from the Ron and Gayl Johnson Fund of Equity Foundation.
