PCC offers slate of non-credit classes in St. Helens

ST. HELENS, Ore. – Spring is nature’s time for new growth – so why not capture the spirit of the season by growing a new interest or hobby? Portland Community College’s non-credit classes in St. Helens will offer opportunities to learn drawing, fly-fishing, photography and more. Drawing Basics: All Levels will be taught by William Crist, a retired art professor from the University of Missouri. Students will gain observational drawing, composition, and design skills as well as how to use black and white media. Unlock your creativity with this six-week class, meeting from 6:30 to 9:30p.m. Tuesdays, March 30 through May 4, in Room C60 at St. Helens High School, 2375 Gable Road, St. Helens. Cost is $101.50.Fly-fishing 101, led by Mark Williamson, will help you enjoy the area’s natural beauty this spring. Learn how to purchase equipment, read the water, make knots, where to fish and more. The class includes casting techniques and practice and tips on helpful books, references and videos. The three-part class will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, April 6 and April 13, and conclude on Saturday, April 17, with a 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. casting session. Students will meet in the Board Room at Scappoose School District Office, 33589 S.E. High School Way, Scappoose. Cost is $84.Photography: Beginning in St. Helens, taught by Ron Barnett, will help you operate your 35mm camera with more knowledge and confidence. Learn about film and shutter speeds, lenses and how to compose interesting photos. The seven-week class will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, April 6 through May 18, in Room A1 at St. Helens High School, 2375 Gable Road, St. Helens.
