PORTLAND, Ore. – No higher education institution has offered a program to prepare audiovisual systems technicians. That is until now, as a consortium of colleges that includes Portland Community College plans to offer a complete program for audiovisual specialists. The group of seven colleges along with the International Communications Industries Association coordinated to launch AV Tech Online, which consists of eight individual online courses. The curriculum targets incumbent workers, including audiovisual professionals who are seeking college credit and those who use AV technologies as a part of their daily duties. It will be offered as a college certificate or as part of a college degree program. AV Tech Online also eliminates duplicative effort by each college and will streamline expense."The industry told us they needed this and it’s proven to be true,"said John Sneed, director of PCC’s Distance Education program. "The really telling thing is how enthusiastic our local industry members are. They’ve formed an apprenticeship board and have gotten state approval for an apprenticeship program using the courses to meet the related courses requirement."The colleges offering audiovisual courses immediately for 2003-04 are PCC as well as Dallas County Community College District, Metropolitan Community Colleges, Community in Miami-Dade College and Northern Virginia Community College, some of the largest community college systems in the country.Details and registration are accessible at for the Improvement of Post-secondary Education (FIPSE) of the U.S. Department of Education sponsors this program.
