LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. – White water kayaking isn’t just for expert athletes – it’s also a sport enjoyed by many who just love the thrill of maneuvering on the river and experiencing nature’s playground. Portland Community College will present beginning classes this June, in time to pick up the basics and head out to the rapids this summer.White Water Kayaking, a non-credit class, will offer fundamental techniques and practice in a pool. Instructor Dave Wright offers in-boat training on paddling strokes, maneuvering, the Eskimo roll and more. Students will emerge from the class with all the necessary skills to get out on the river and see Oregon’s spectacular beauty from a different vantage point."Once I got the Eskimo roll down in the pool, I felt completely ready to head out to the river and put my skills to use,"says previous student Suzanne Moore. "Now I love the sport, and can’t wait for summer weekends so I can brave the rapids in my kayak."The class will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Mondays, June 23 through July 14, in the pool at Lake Oswego High School, 2501 S.W. Country Club Road. Cost is $119.For more information, contact PCC Community Education at 503-731-6692.
