PORTLAND, Ore. – Six Portland Community College students will have their tuition mostly paid for this upcoming school year thanks to the Ford Family Foundation Scholarships, announced on May 30.The Oregon Student Assistance Commission awarded PCC students two kinds of scholarships. The Ford Opportunity program is designed to assist college students who are single parents. The Ford Restart scholarship helps nontraditional adult students of all ages who wish to begin or continue schooling. Ford Family Foundation awarded 230 scholarships from its various programs for the upcoming year. Melodie Adams (southeast Portland), Katy Polluconi (Milwaukie), Danielle Williams (Dayton) and Carrie Elgin (southeast Portland) received the Ford Opportunity Scholarship. The Ford Restart scholarship went to Stuart Marceau (Forest Grove) and Roberta Tyler (north Portland). Each scholarship will pay for 90 percent of the cost of the student’s tuition for the 2002-03 school year. According to the Oregon Student Assistance Commission, the average Ford scholarship award for the two programs is $5,400 per year.Criteria for selection to these scholarships include making significant contributions to others, demonstrated leadership, and those who otherwise would be unable to pay for the expenses of attending college. The program received more than 4,900 applications for the Ford Scholarships statewide. Three separate committees screened applications and conducted more than 4,000 interviews.
