PCC-Sponsored Volunteer Literacy Conference Scheduled for March 17 at Reed College

PORTLAND, Ore. – New topics and a multitude of presenters will headline the Volunteer Literacy Tutor Conference at the Vollum Center at Reed College, located at 3203 S.E. Woodstock Blvd. The conference, sponsored by Portland Community College’s Volunteer Literacy Tutoring program and the Portland Literacy Council, will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 17. There will be 14 different workshops to choose from and some will be led by PCC faculty, including Basic Grammar for ESL Students, Five Ways to Teach Reading and Writing, Pronunciation Techniques, Citizenship I and II, and Internet for ABE Students. The day will be broken up into three sessions, from 9 to 10:15 a.m., 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. and 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. The conference will also feature student speakers, an Oregon Literacy Bookstore display, new ideas for tutoring and an opportunity to network with other tutors.The Portland Literacy Council and PCC along with Clackamas and Mt. Hood community colleges collaborate in the Portland metropolitan area to provide services to students who need tutoring to improve basic reading, writing and math skills (ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL) and preparation for the GED. The volunteer tutors go through a 17-hour training session before being matched with students. Morning refreshments and a buffet lunch will be served. Materials and three workshop options are available for a cost of $15. Pre-registration is required by Friday, March 9.
