PCC Senior Studies to Explore Exotic Topics in Spring Courses

PORTLAND, Ore. – Does Chinese history or classical Baroque music sound like fascinating things to study? If so, Portland Community College’s Senior Studies Institute has a provocative menu of class offerings this spring term, starting Monday, March 26.One of the most interesting courses is The Middle Kingdom: 21st Century Superpower, which will review Chinese history from 1800 to the present and explore political to social issues. The class, taught by Bill Gucker, will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays between March 27 and April 24 at the Central Portland Workforce Training Center (located at 1626 S.E. Water Ave.). Other classes include a look at classical music of the Mississippi (May 31), compositions of Aaron Copeland (April 5), medical ethics (April 12), personal account of Alaskan arctic (April 5), and field trips to the Spruce Goose in McMinnville (May 23) and the Classical Chinese Garden (May 3-10).Senior Studies Institute members pay an annual fee of $30 and anyone may attend on a trial basis. Classes will be held at the SMILE station (8210 S.E. 13th), Neighborhood House Senior Center (7688 S.W. Capitol Hwy.) and the Washington County Workforce Training Center (185th and Walker Rd).
