FAQ – The Carolyn Moore Writing Residency
How do I apply?
The application can be filled out via Google Forms. There is no application fee, and we encourage writers at all stages of their practice to apply. The 2026-2027 application is open February 15, 2026 through March 1, 2026, or until a cap of 150 applicants is reached: 2026-27 Carolyn Moore Writing Residency Application.
I am an intermedia or interdisciplinary writer. May I apply?
Yes! While the Writers House does not have a dedicated studio space for artists, you are encouraged to apply if your writing practice incorporates other media (for example, video, photography, social practice, and/or drawing). Selection as an intermedia or interdisciplinary resident will be based on ability to accommodate your practice within the boundaries of the Writers House and your fellow resident (for example, smelly or hazardous materials are not permitted).
What is the length of the residency?
Typically residencies are 4 weeks, but you are welcome to propose staying for a shorter period of time, if that better suits your schedule. We generally do not schedule residencies for fewer than 2 weeks.
What is the Writers House like?
The Writers House is a beautiful log cabin home with full modern amenities on nine acres, complete with a fruit orchard, gardens, and a marsh. The House has two wings, each with its own generous living space, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and access to a shared onsite laundry room, enabling two concurrent residents.
Important: During the 2026-27 residency season, there will be construction on two neighboring lots that are not owned by PCC. The lots are located approximately 300 feet away from the Writers House. We will make all efforts to communicate updates about construction as we are informed, and will work to ensure resident privacy and peace. However, we cannot guarantee a completely noise-free experience. Please take this into consideration before applying.
As a resident, what will my schedule look like from week to week?
The residency is self-directed, so this is up to you! Some residents schedule readings or events in the Portland area during their stay, but this is not required. The Writers House is located in a quiet suburb of Portland, and there are many trails and parks located close to the Writers House. We strive to provide residents with the gift of time, offering a dedicated space for creativity and artistic exploration. The only set event is the community engagement portion of the residency, which will vary from person to person.
Tell me more about the community engagement portion of the Residency.
The Residency offers writers concentrated time to focus on developing a writing-focused work in a self-directed environment, while also providing PCC students the opportunity to meet and interact with talented writers and artists from across the country. To accomplish this, residents are required to participate in one PCC-sponsored or co-sponsored event that is free and open to the community, during their stay.
Some examples of community engagement are: give a public reading hosted or co-hosted by PCC, participate in a student-led interview, lead a workshop, present or record a craft talk, or visit a PCC campus (classroom, gallery, center, etc.) to engage with students and/or faculty. Opportunities for engagement are not limited to what’s listed here and you are welcome to propose ideas that best align with your practice, skills, and comfort level.
How will I get around?
The nearest bus stop is about 15 minutes away from the Writers House, and it’s about 2 hours via light rail (MAX) and bus to the Portland International Airport. Traveling from the Writers House to downtown Portland is about one hour via public transportation. The Tigard area is served by taxis and rideshare, such as Lyft. While a personal vehicle is not required to enjoy your time at the Writers House, please know that trips to grocery stores, restaurants, etc. do take between 30-60 minutes via walking, biking, or public transit. The regional transit agency, TriMet, has a trip planner that can help give you an idea of travel options and approximate times: Plan a Trip. Transportation will be provided for PCC sponsored events, if needed.
What should I bring?
The Writers House is divided into two wings with a mix of private and shared spaces. Each wing has its own bedroom, bathroom, living area, and kitchen equipped with a full-sized refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, and coffeemaker. Basic supplies, such as paper towels, toilet paper, utensils, pots and pans, plates, cups, bowls, mugs, dish and hand soap, linens, and towels, are provided. If you need specialized kitchen equipment or anything else, please be prepared to bring it with you. There is a set of shared light weights, two bikes and two helmets, and yoga mats for residents’ use. Personal toiletries, including over the counter medication, are not provided.
Are meals provided?
No, meals are not provided. Each wing of the house has a fully equipped kitchen and there are restaurants nearby. Meal delivery services will also deliver to the house.
Can friends, family, or significant others visit?
You are welcome to have casual visitors, including children, to the Writers House and grounds during your residency. Overnight guests must be 18 or older, and are permitted for up to three nights only with prior notice to the Program Coordinator. Guests under 18 are not permitted to stay overnight. Out of respect for your co-resident and neighbors, large parties are not permitted. You are responsible for the conduct of your visitors.
What about pets?
At this time, we do not allow pets to stay with residents at the Writers House. Please reach out to the Program Coordinator if you have a question about Service Animals.
What if I have more questions? Who should I contact?
That’s great! Thanks for your interest in our residency program, and we are happy to help! Your question might be answered in the 2025-26 copy of our Residency Handbook. If not, please contact the Interim Program Coordinator, Kelsey Ferreira.
