Course Description

Introduces interpreting in specialized settings, such as post-secondary and religious settings, and Video Relay Service. Includes specialized terminology, policies, and procedures of each setting.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Produce a meaning-based, simultaneous interpretation of the main points with supporting details of a given source message within the context of a specialized setting common to post-graduation employment.

  2. Conduct self-assessments and peer-assessments to identify current skill level and develop an individual plan for improvement.

  3. Describe the logistics, best practices, and special considerations of interpreting in special settings common to post-graduation employment.

Course Activities and Design

Students will perform simultaneous interpretations on topics common to specific fields of interpreting. Students will discuss and demonstrate best practices for each field of interpreting.  Students will continue to learn self-assessment and peer-review techniques to further become aware of patterns in their own skill development. 

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be evaluated through assignments, in-class performance, quizzes, and formal evaluations of recorded ASL-to-English and English-to-ASL interpretations. Students will be assessed on their ability to produce a grammatically correct, simultaneous, meaning-based interpretation of a source message.

This course will cover the following topics:

  • Simultaneous interpreting in specific settings such as and higher education, VRS, performance, and religious settings.
  • Best practices and policies in specific fields of interpreting.
  • Analysis of context, purpose, purpose and register of both English and ASL messages in a given field of interpretation.
