Course Description

Provides advanced training in motivational interviewing (MI). Explores topics such as: ambivalence, discord, and change talk. Covers MI techniques with specific populations and contexts related to addiction counseling. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Apply advanced MI techniques and strategies in a clinical practice.

  2. Demonstrate principles of ambivalence and discord in MI and how to integrate them.

  3. Apply MI techniques in a variety of cultural contexts. 

  4. Develop advanced effective strategies for promoting and eliciting change talk in MI.

  5. Apply ethical principles in MI practice.
