Building 2 and beyond

We’re exploring how Building 2 (B2) can best serve students on campus and accommodate modern tools, technology, and safety needs. As we look closer at Building 2, we’re also addressing the overall campus and how we can enhance circulation and access to outdoor spaces.

This redevelopment will prioritize learning environments, land stewardship, and collaboration, while focusing on advancing sustainability and equity throughout the process. Early goals for this project address the needs of programs and services on the Rock Creek Campus:

• Improve the programmatic space at Building 2, which houses Career Technical Education (CTE) Programs such as Automotive Collision Repair, Building Construction, and Diesel, along with computer labs, general academic programs, student resource centers, collaboration spaces, and staff office and meeting areas.
• Expand access to the outdoors by enhancing views to the surrounding natural environment while providing more equitable spaces to support learning.
• Increase wayfinding, accessibility, safety, and stormwater mitigation to strengthen campus connectivity and enhance the overall campus experience.
• Enhance collaboration spaces and a variety of learning environments to promote student interaction and skills exchange.

Phase 2: Design

The Future Rock Creek timeline has four major phases: vision, design, build, and open. Each one is designed to build upon feedback received from the PCC community and key stakeholders that will inform the next phase.

During the vision phase, students, faculty, and staff helped identify priorities and opportunities for the future of Rock Creek Campus. A steering committee was also established and continues to meet regularly to help guide project planning and decision-making.

The project is now in the design phase, where those ideas and priorities are being translated into detailed plans for future improvements that are within the project budget. Current work includes design development for a new Building Construction Technology (BCT) facility, a major multi-phase renovation of Building 2 (B2), and phased swing space improvements that will support future construction activities. Throughout this phase, the project team will continue engaging with students, faculty, staff, and community members to help inform landscape design, wayfinding and navigation, restroom design, art, and environmental graphic design as plans are refined and prepared for construction.

From feedback to design

Community engagement continues to play an important role in shaping the Future Rock Creek project. Through workshops, campus events, and ongoing conversations, students, faculty, staff, and community members have shared feedback on how campus spaces can better support learning, wellbeing, accessibility, and belonging.

Key themes have included preserving Rock Creek’s connection to nature, creating welcoming and easy-to-navigate spaces, improving opportunities for collaboration and study, and designing environments that support a wide range of physical, sensory, and cultural needs. These insights continue to inform project planning and design development as the team works to create spaces that support student success and strengthen the campus experience for all.

CTE Industry research in action

Career and Technical Education (CTE) is dedicated to equipping students with the essential skills needed for successful career entry, professional growth, and continuing education.

PCC has been hard at work with CTE industry experts, employers, and community colleges across the country to gather feedback and best practices for the design of Building 2. Combined with faculty input, this research provides the Steering Committee with insights to help shape the design of new spaces for automotive, diesel, and construction programs. The research highlights what matters most: strong core skills, safer and more flexible spaces, and readiness for emerging technologies.
